RISHI Foundation’s recent publication in Teacher Plus magazine, titled, ‘Learning about learning: Insights from an educational workshop conducted with youth living with HIV’, was co-written with Bindu Thirumalai, and highlights how metacognition – ‘learning how we learn’ – can transform education, especially for youth living with HIV.
The article draws from the workshop facilitated by Bindu and Kuldeep on 7-8 February 2025, where young participants from RISHI Foundation’s programs explored self-awareness, time management, goal-setting, and reflective practices like journaling.
Tools such as the Rocks-Pebbles-Sand model, SWOT analysis, and SMART goals helped peers strengthen self-efficacy and purpose. To quote the article, “This workshop wasn’t just about strategies and tools—it was about igniting a passion for learning and boosting student engagement. Previously disengaged participants identified in themselves a desire to implement the new learning within their daily activities as peer mentors of other HIV affected individuals.”
Many have since applied these skills as peer mentors. Some went on to lead a health concerns training session for young girls living with HIV, where they drew on their insights from the workshop.
